ABOUT THIS COURSECourse Description
Adopting an experiential learning model of education, the New York Experience course will introduce students to the culture, history, and arts of New York, one of the greatest cities in the world. Each of our classes will focus on a different section of the city and we will explore the historic sites, museums, galleries, and popular cultural attractions associated with this section. The aim of this class is to develop an insight into the myriad of intersecting--and at times competing--cultures that make up New York City. Course Fees and Expenses
Unfortunately, this class has costs above and beyond more traditional classes at Molloy. In addition to regular four credit tuition, the following costs apply. $100 active-learning fee: this fee is payable upon registration for this course. The actual cost to run the class is about $250 (for admissions, guides, groups meals, ect.), so Molloy actually contributes approximately $100-$150 per student to help defray program costs. $20 for course text: payable in cash at our orientation meeting. The text that you will be using has been created specifically for this class. Expenses while in New York City
Class Meeting Time and Location
Unless otherwise specified by the instructors, our normal meeting place will be in front of the LIRR ticket window at Penn Station at exactly 11am. Because we will be departing each class at exactly 11:05, you are strongly encouraged to arrive at the meeting location early. This will give you time to get something to eat in Penn Station and to use the bathroom before we depart on our adventures in urban education. Our departure at the end of each class will be from the same location on or around 7pm. These times have been chosen so that you will only have to pay the off-peak prices for tickets if you are travelling on the Long Island Railroad. Students who opt to remain in the city rather than departing as scheduled are strongly encouraged to inform the instructors of this fact upon arrival at Penn Station. Please note that the College and the instructors bear absolutely no responsibility for students who remain in the City on their own time.

Absentee/Lateness Policy
Because of the compressed nature of this class, your participation in each session listed above is required. Students who miss class for any reason will have their final grade for the class reduced by 7% for each missed class. If you think that you will have to miss more than one class, you are strongly advised to find another, more traditional class to take. It is also extremely important that you show up on time (before 11am) at our meeting point at Penn Station and remain with us for the entire eight hours of the class. You are responsible for meeting the instructors at Penn Station at 11am. If you are late, you are responsible for catching up with the group on your own, using the emergency contact number that you will be given. In order to ensure punctuality, 1 point will be deducted for each hour of class time that you miss due to lateness or premature departure from the city. Academicy Stuff
All the gory details about course requirements (you know--the stuff that you need to do to get a grade for this class) can be found on the COURSE REQUIREMENTS page of this site. This is important, so make sure that you know what is expected of you before this class begins! |
